Class007-21 Thepurposeofthisessayistoinformthereaderondifferenttypesofleadershipstyles.Leadershipstylesvaryinmanydifferentpeople.Somelackingwhatotherleadershave,but moresoeachleaderhastheirownwayofgoingaboutthings.Thisessaywillgiveamorein depthlookondifferenttypesofleadershipstyles.
Thereconsistsoffiveleadershipstyles:transactional,transformational,servant,
autocratic,andfollowership.Transactionalisamorestructuredstyleleadership.Theleader focusesonthegoalandgivesthefollowersanincentiveandperformancereportsonhowthe objectivewascompleteandhowwellthefollowerscompletedtheobjective.Transactional leadershipstylesappearmoreinthemilitarysinceitrequiresdisciplineinthesubordinates.It requiresanimmediateactiontoagiveninstructionwhiletheleaderscheckuponprogressand giveaperformancereportafterthetaskiscomplete.Typically,incentivessuchaspromotions, rewards,orofftimeisrewardedforcompletionfromthesubordinates.Thebenefitofa transactionalleadershipisthesubordinatesaremoredriventocompletetasksknowingthat theremaybeanincentiveincompletingthetaskthecorrectway.Leadershipalsogetsa chancetodirectandgiveinstructioninthewaytheywantitdone.Mostpowerisleftwithinthe leaderwhiletheworkingforcecomesfromthesubordinates.Thedetrimentofhavinga transactionalleadershipisthelackofcreativityfromthesubordinates.Sincemostofthepower iscomingfromtheleaders,thisleavesthesubordinateswithlittleroomtohaveacreative mindset.However,theleaderwantsthingsdoneisthewayithastogo.Examplesof transactionalleadersareGeneralNormanH.SchwarzkopfandVinceLombardi.
Transformationalleadersbelieveinchangingovertime.Overtimesituations maybedifferentduetochangesintheworld.Transformationalleadersunderstandthisand tendtotakeideasandopinionsfromothers.Leadersarerequiredtohaveanopenmindto manyideasthatcandifferfromtheirideas.Leadersworkwithsubordinatestoidentifyneeded changeandviewpointstochangethroughinspirationsfromothers.ALeader’stransformative traitsofatransformativeleaderarecuriosity,visionary,teamfirstattitude,charismatic,anda toleranceforrisk.Thebenefitofatransformationalleadershipstyleisthattheleadersare typicallyprofessionalsattheirjobandunderstandtheobjectivemorethanothers.The detrimentsofatransformationalleadershiparethesideeffectsofthesubordinatesbeingableto giveaninput.Thiscouldresultintotheteamdisagreeingonideasandhavingconflict.In anothersense,theycouldlosefocusonthetaskathand.Examplesofatransformationalleader isOmarBradleyandPresidentFranklinD.Roosevelt.Themoreeffectiveandcommonleadershipisservantleadershipstyle.Leadersare requiredtoputtheneedsofothersbeforetheirown.Theimportanceofdevelopingsoldiersby takingcareoftheirneeds.ThebuildingblockoftheNon-CommissionedOfficer,thisinstills trustinourformations.EmpathyisabigfactorinthesoldierversusNon-CommissionedOfficer relationship.Understandingthesoldier’sbackgroundandhowtheyfeelaboutthingswillhelp youbeabetterservantleader.Thebeneficialsidesofaservantleadershipstylearethatit buildstrustandcompanionshipbetweenleadersandsubordinates.However,itisdetrimentalin asenseoftime.Ittakesaperiodtobuildtrustbetweenindividuals.Inasituationwherean objectiveneedtobedoneinatimelyfashion,servantleadershipwouldnotbethebestidea.Leadersareexpectedtobethedecisionmakersandoutputpositiveresults.Theyare madetoissueclearinformationandnotexpectmuchinputfromthesubordinates.Eventhough,
autocraticleadersrespecttheirsubordinatesandcommunicatewiththeindividualstohelpmeet theirgoal.Theyhaveatranslucentviewpointofthemissionsuccessandwhatcompletionlooks andfeelslike.Duetotheirleadershipstyle,theyareexpectedtohaveahighsuccessrate.Whensuccessisnotmet,itismoresoontheleaderandnotthesubordinates.Examplesofan autocraticleadershipareGeneralGeorgeS.PattonandBillBelichick.Followershipmaysoundmoresoofasubordinatetrait,thoughitishighlyeffectivein leadership.Followershiprequiresthesameeffortasleadershipandadherestothesame dedicationasanyother.Followershiprequiresselflessservice,duty,andpersonalcourage.Followershippracticesassistingtheirleadershiptothebestoftheirability.Theydonotshy awayfromcomingtotheirleaderswithproblemsandhelpsolvetheconflict.Followershipis bestatusewhentheleadersunderstandthatfollowinginstructionsisnottheendtocompleting thetask.Mosttimesthereareimpliedtasksthatrequireunspokeninstruction.Followership stylestendtoanticipatetheleader’scommand.Thiscanbeseendetrimentalbecauseifthe commandiswronglyanticipated,itmayresultinmissionfailureandaltertaskcompletion.The benefitsofafollowerleadershipstylearetheleadernothavingtomicromanageandgivemuch outputtootherleaders.Theyareexpectingmissionsuccessandhaveagoodviewpointonwhat todotoreachmissionsuccess.Therearemanydifferentleadershipstyles,somemaybesituationalandonlydeem effectiveincertaintimeperiods.Theyareallleadershipstylestoinvestigateandusetothebest ofanindividual’sabilities.Goodleadersdonotfocusononeleadershipstylebutfocusonall andtakeaccountthatdifferentleadershipstylesworkfordifferentindividualsanddifferent situations.Understandingthiswillresultingreatleadershipovertime.
