CHEMISTRY

Mrs. Ison – Honors Chemistry Syllabus 2021-2022 Grading Categories Grades will be divided into two categories: Assignments and Assessments. Assignments will make up 30% of the yearly grade and Assessments will make up 70% of the yearly grade. There will be no extra credit awarded in this course. Examples of Assignments may include the following: any tasks related to the school wide expectations (Safety, Work Ethic, Accountability, Giving Respect) – lab/classroom/emergency drill safety, participation, completion, meeting deadlines, being prepared and on time, graded work, checks for understanding, showing consideration, maintaining classroom/materials, proper use of technology, etc. Examples of Assessments may include the following: any assignment where the student is given the opportunity to demonstrate understanding of priority standards – unit/standard assessments, lab assessments, projects, written work, etc.The yearly grade will comprise 90% of the student’s overall grade. Chemistry does include a final exam that will account for the remaining 10%. I work very hard to put grades in Infinite Campus in a timely manner and expect students and parents to refer to IC regularly to monitor progress. I will not use unscheduled class time to check grades.

**Special Notes on Grading: Grading current work takes priority over other work (late work, makeup work, etc.). Your grade in Infinite Campus (not Canvas) is your current grade.

Learning and Relearning At Cooper, we value learning and understand that sometimes students do not learn at the same pace. We also know that many students need to develop better habits such as completing and turning in work on time, doing homework, spending time outside of class studying, and not falling behind in classes. To help improve learning and school habits, Cooper is adopting the following in all classes as it relates to learning, meeting deadlines,

and reassessing:

 Students must turn in all Assignments before the initial unit assessment (or completion of a unit) in order to receive a score for those Assignments. Students who have not reached mastery on an assessment (less than 90%) may retake that assessment to replace the grade if they made a valid first attempt. In order to retake an assessment, students must complete relearning before retaking the assessment. This relearning is approved by the teacher but will not directly affect the course grade. Relearning may include one or more of the following: attending tutoring, completion of all relevant Assignments, completion of additional work, test corrections, completion of an online module, etc. The deadline for completing a reassessment is 10 school days after the initial assessment grade is posted in Infinite Campus.

Teacher discretion will be used when necessary.

Personal Statement It is very important that you review your daily work, homework, and labs frequently! This is especially true because your work has a purpose. Most assignments have one or more of the following aims:  Preparation provides information – history, skills, definitions; intended to allow you to benefit when the new material is addressed in class. This study source was downloaded by 100000839306532 from CourseHero.com on 06-24-2022 17:30:11 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/113363130/Working-Honors-Chem-Syllabus-for-2021-2022pdf/

Mrs. Ison – Honors Chemistry Syllabus 2021-2022  Practice reinforces the learning of material already presented in class and helps you master specific skills. Extension or elaboration involves the transfer of previously learned skills to new situations. Integration asks you to apply skills and concepts to produce a single product (e.g., book report, science project) I will make every effort to communicate the purpose of assignments to you. Access to most solutions to assignments will be in Canvas and you are expected to self-grade these assignments using the solutions. If you are having difficulties with any of the topics covered in this course, see me as soon as possible.Accomplishing and understanding your work will dictate your success in the course. Timely completion of assignments is to help you understand the material, not for the teacher.

Binders Students will be asked to maintain an organized binder. While there will not be binder assessments, any student who wishes to do a retake for any standard assessment will be asked for his/her binder, as it must be able to show that he/she has completed and corrected all materials for the standard.

Lab Safety In order for chemistry to be taught properly and effectively, laboratory investigations must be an integral part of the course. They enhance understanding of the scientific and experimental processes and support content knowledge. Lab is a potentially dangerous environment and self-control and maturity is a must. It is the teacher’s discretion to remove a student from class during a lab and supply, in place of the lab, a written assignment covering similar material to be submitted by the student in the place of the lab for a grade. The Lab Safety Contract must be signed by the student and the parent/legal guardian. Students and parents/guardians must also both sign off that they have read the Lab & Science Classroom Safety Guidelines and Consequences document. These must be on file with the instructor before students will be allowed to participate in labs. Students must also pass a lab safety quiz with a 90% or higher.

Tutoring There are 3 teachers teaching Chemistry this year (Mrs. Hall and Dr. Campbell, in addition to myself). We work very closely with each other and will be covering similar material each week. Together, we are planning to offer after school tutoring multiple days each week to students from any of the chemistry classes. Students are encouraged to attend tutoring sessions as needed. Generally, tutoring lasts 30-45 minutes after school. More details to come. **Special Note: We are willing and happy to help students who are genuinely struggling with the course. However, if you are going to ask us for our time after school, you should be completing assigned work and/or giving full attention/effort during class.

Classroom Procedures  Beginning of class: Students should come to class prepared, check the board for daily instructions, place cell phones in the pocket chart in the front of the room, put all non-chemistry material in the compartments near the hood, and be seated in their assigned seats when class is scheduled to begin. Socializing and wandering around the room when it is time to begin class may result in a tardy. Be sure to check the board daily to know whether or not a device will be needed for class. Sharpening pencils: Students should sharpen pencils when first arriving to class. If a pencil needs to be sharpened during class, however, students may do so as long as there is no more than 1 person at the pencil sharpener at a time. It is not necessary for students to raise their hand to ask permission. Mrs. Ison – Honors Chemistry Syllabus 2021-2022  Questions or comments: Students should raise their hand to ask a question or make a comment. Announcements: No matter when announcements come on, students should stop what they’re doing, get quiet, and pay attention. Leaving the room: Students need to use the time they are given between classes wisely. This is the time to go to the restroom and locker. However, students may be granted permission to leave the room. One student will be permitted out of the classroom at a time and students should return in less than 5 minutes. If the privilege of leaving the room is abused, it will be taken away. E-hallpass will be used again this year. Students are responsible for creating a pass and for asking the teacher to end the pass upon their return. BE SURE TO

ALWAYS CLOSE THE DOOR BEHIND YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE THE ROOM!!

 Handwriting: If I can’t read it, it will be counted as incorrect. Students should make every effort to practice good handwriting skills in class and when completing assignments. Cheating: Cheating is not allowed and is extremely detrimental to the learning process in this class. This includes sharing information during a test or quiz, copying of any assignment, or submitting work that is not original. All parties involved will be given a zero on the assignment, parent contact will be made, and other disciplinary action may be taken. Note: Sharing answers via pictures through cell phones is cheating!! Plagiarism: This is a form of cheating. This includes copying and pasting from internet sources and copying information or answers word for word from a source. No name papers: Occasionally, students may turn in assignments without names. These assignments will be hung in a designated spot in the classroom. If a student feels confident that he/she completed the assigned work, but has a zero for the grade, check this area first. If it is not there, let me know immediately. If the problem is corrected in a timely fashion, the correct grade will replace the zero. This is the student’s responsibility. After a given time period, papers with no names will be discarded. Absent work: It is the responsibility of the student to find out what was missed on the day(s) absent. Students can find missed work on the Weekly Agenda page in Canvas. Most assignments will be linked so students can print a copy directly from Canvas. There is also a designated area on top of the compartments where students can find hard copies of absent work upon their return. Students are given as many days to make-up the missed work as days they were absent. If there are any questions regarding content, please schedule a time with me to review the material. Missed assessments related to a standard must be made up by the day of the unit/standard assessment. Otherwise, they will remain a zero. Students should be prepared to make up any missed assessment on the day they return to school. If time allows, students may be asked to complete an assignment or assessment during class. When turning in make-up work, please be sure to write “ABSENT” at the top of the front page. Absent for a Lab: Students who are absent on the day of the lab will need to get the data from a table mate to use in order to complete the lab. Most labs will be assessed, so it is necessary for ALL students to be familiar with ALL lab investigations (whether present or absent). Please be sure to schedule time to meet with me if any questions arise. Late Assignments: Late assignments will be accepted up until the day of the unit/standard assessment. However, there will be a penalty of 50% off the earned grade for all late assignments. Missing Work: For missing work due to an absence, an “M” will be present in Infinite Campus (which counts as a zero). Once the work is completed and turned in, it will be graded and Infinite Campus will be updated.**Reminder, when it comes to grading, current work always takes priority over non-current work. Winter Weather Work: If inclement weather prevents school from occurring in person, be sure to check the Weekly Agenda in Canvas for your assignment. It is your responsibility! Lost Handouts: Whether it is a reference document or worksheet, I will only print one copy for each student.Digital copies of most assignments are located in Canvas. Conduct: The goal in the classroom is to provide the greatest educational benefit to all students. Mutual respect and consideration is expected in words and actions. Behavior in class should not interfere with the educational process. The instructor has the right to utilize disciplinary action for any student whose behavior she judges to be disruptive to the teaching and learning process. See the student Code of Conduct handbook for details.
