NUR2356-Module 02 Assignment- ATI Video Case Study on Therapeutic Communication Purpose

  • Identify therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication techniques.
  • Identify congruency between verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Document the conversation and label the parts of the conversation.

Course Competency • Apply strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing practice when providing basic care and comfort for clients.

Instructions

For this assignment, fill out the template provided directly after these instructions.

  • Listen to the ATI video case study called Therapeutic Communication.
  • Record the conversation, indicating the comments made by the nurse and client in
  • the correct columns.

  • Observe and document the verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Label the verbal and non-verbal communication as therapeutic or non-therapeutic.
  • Provide the rationale for each of the labels (therapeutic or non-therapeutic).
  • Indicate a statement or response that may have been more therapeutic for those
  • believed to be barriers to communication.

  • At the conclusion of the conversation, write a paragraph indicating how you would
  • feel if you were the client in this situation.

Nurse Verbal o “Are we feeling any better now”?

  • “And what exactly makes you say that”?
  • “Do not worry, things will get better soon”.
  • “I know exactly how you feel”.
  • “I felt the same way when I lost my father”.
  • “Perhaps you should just focus on something else, to get
  • her off your mind”.Therapeutic “I felt the same way when I lost my father”. This statement shows empathy.Non-therapeutic o “And what exactly makes you say that”? After explaining to the nurse how he felt, she asked a question that made the patient feel like she did not listen to him.

  • “Don’t worry, things will get better soon”. This is
  • providing the patient with false reassurance. The nurse does not know if things will get better for the patient so she should not be saying it.

  • “I know exactly how you feel”. The nurse might have
  • thought she was showing empathy but because of the way she said it, it also seems like she is dismissing his hurt and saying that everyone goes through this, like it is not big deal.

  • “Perhaps you should just focus on something else, to get
  • her off your mind”. When a patient is feeling hopeless and lonely, the last thing they can do is move on. By saying this, the nurse is not addressing how the patient can begin to heal, just that he needs to get over it Alternate Response The nurse should be using a softer tone of voice. After the patient has expressed his feelings; the nurse should clarify what she is hearing and ask the patient to explain more. When hearing that the patient depended on his mother for everything, she should have asked the patient to tell her what kind of help he needs at home so that she can try to implement a plan to offer resources to the patient. Phrases like “you said you do not think you can do this anymore; it sounds like you are feeling hopeless? Can you tell me more”? Would have been a better question, to have the patient clarify his feelings and

explain more of his situation at home.Non-verbal o Closed body language

  • Raising eyebrows
  • Pursing lips
  • Looks like she is not interested in what he has to say
  • Therapeutic The nurse did nothing therapeutic with her non-verbal skills Non-therapeutic o By raising her eyebrows and looking at the table instead of maintaining eye contact with the patient, the nurse showed disinterest in what the patient had to say.

  • When talking with the patient she had also clasped her
  • arms in front of her giving away a closed posture.Alternate Response The nurse should have maintained eye contact, she should present herself to be more open for communication and nod her head to show to the patient that she is listening to what he has to say. By softening her facial expressions, she could present herself as more approachable and understanding to his difficult situation.
