Informative Speech Outline

TOPIC: An Informative Speech on nursing/neonatal nursing in general, and how this career relates to me

GENERAL PURPOSE : To inform/entertain

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: At the end of my speech, the audience will know more about nursing as a whole, specifically the classes that contribute to becoming a nurse, and why I chose this career in life. Students will also be able to relate to the topic because I am taking classes towards this career at Broward College.CENTRAL IDEA: Today I'm going to tell you about what it takes to become a nurse, what defines nursing, what neonatal nursing is specifically, and why nursing was the path I chose to take as my career choice.INTRODUCTION: What do you think of when you hear the word "Nurse"? Maybe you think of a caring person sitting bedside with a patient, or a person frantically running around a hospital in scrubs. Perhaps you imagine someone checking a patients blood pressure, or hearing their heart beat rhythmically through a stethoscope. These are all reasonable things to consider when you hear the word "nurse", however, nursing is defined by so much more than that. emotional, compassionate, loving, empathetic, and it's basically an art exhibit of the human body and so much goes into it. As I previously stated, nursing can be thought of as art because just like art, nursing requires exclusive devotion, hard preparation, and practice. It is not a skill that can be simply obtained overnight. The human body is a sophisticated, intricate system of precise jobs that are assigned to every organ, cell, molecule, etc. Everything in the body has a function, everything has a job to carry out. Therefore, if one function stops being carried out, it can affect the entire body as a whole. Pinpointing what the problem is, and working to fix it is where nursing comes in.

BODY:

1.According to Broward Colleges website, nurses are invaluable members of any health care team. As mediators between doctors and patients, nurses are often the ones who help patients better understand their health and treatment options, in addition to providing emotional support during distressing times. To become a nurse, there are many different routes you can take.A.For example, Broward colleges' Associate in Science Degree in Nursing program is designed to prepare an individual for a career as a registered nurse. The program's mission is to prepare competent, compassionate, and culturally sensitive entry-level nursing graduates whose professional practice encompasses legal and ethical decision- making in the promotion of health in the community.

1.The nursing program combines studies in general education and nursing education at the college with selected clinical experiences in hospitals and other community facilities.Nursing courses require students to spend a combined 20 to 36 hours per week in the classroom and clinical settings. The program consists of 72 credits. The ratio of clock hours to credit hours in the clinical courses is 3.5 to 1. There are 56 hours of clinical This study source was downloaded by 100000835004878 from CourseHero.com on 01-04-2022 15:41:19 GMT -06:00

practicum for each credit and 16 hours of theory for each credit. Generic students attend 1008 hours of clinical. LPN-RN Transition students attend 728 hours of clinical. Clinical hours are a combination of nursing experiences in acute care and extended care facilities and nursing campus lab setting. All clinical hours are mandatory and it is expected that students will have made arrangements to meet the total required hours.

2.Some of the graduation requirements to become a nurse are:

The completion of 72 semester credit hours curriculum plan with a degree GPA of 2.0 or higher, and all courses are to be completed with a grade of a “C” or higher.

3.Furthermore, before entering the nursing program, students are required to take and pass the HESI exam. HESI stands for Health Education Systems Incorporated. It is a United States based company that provide exams and other educational material designed to prepare student nurses for professional licensure. It also predicts the success levels a student is likely to have in the future with more challenging exams. The exams are computerized and administered online. According to the HESI Admissions Assessment at Chamberlin College of Nursing, this exam is broken down into several categories including: Reading Comprehension ( Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.), Vocabulary & General Knowledge (Contains vocabulary terms that are used commonly in both general English speaking and in the healthcare fields), Grammar (Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc., Basic Math Skills ( Focuses on math skills needed for healthcare fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, This study source was downloaded by 100000835004878 from CourseHero.com on 01-04-2022 15:41:19 GMT -06:00

decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc., Biology (Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc., Chemistry (Contains test items that cover matter, chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, chemical bonding, etc., Anatomy & Physiology (Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems, Personality Profile (Identifies the individual’s dominant personality type, strengths, weaknesses, and suggested learning techniques.), Learning Style (Assesses the preferred learning style of the prospective applicant and offers test-taking and study tips suited for that learning style.), and lastly, Critical Thinking (Assess critical thinking in 4 areas: problem solving, biases and ethical dilemmas, argument analysis, and analysis of data.) These are all subjects essential to becoming a successful nurse.CONNECTIVE: So far, I've explained the educational aspect and how much work it is to obtain an Associate's degree in nursing at Broward college. To obtain an Associate's degree at Broward College a student must meet Broward college's criteria of completing 72 credit hours with a GPA no lower than 2.0, and overall grades of "C's" or higher. Once you have taken the General education credits (English, Anatomy & Physiology, Mathematics, humanities, and a social behavior science) you then must take the HESI exam which is divided into ten categories. (Reading comprehension, Vocabulary & general knowledge, Grammar, Basic math skills, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Personality profile, learning style, and Critical thinking) Finally, after completing the HESI you are free to start your core nursing classes. Once you finish those, you will be a registered nurse. This study source was downloaded by 100000835004878 from CourseHero.com on 01-04-2022 15:41:19 GMT -06:00
