Week 8: Marginalized Women and Childbearing
Families
- As an advanced practice nurse, what are three actions you can take to mitigate social
impacts to marginalized women?
- actions I can take to mitigate social impacts to marginalized women are to 1. Speak to women
in the easiest terms and language possible. 2. Asking women if they have health insurance or if they have money for medical care and decide plan of care and medication based on the information. 3. Asking women about their situation at home and with family.
According to Andermann (2016), poor and less educated people have more health disparities than those who are wealthier and more educated. Speaking to women in a language and grade level they understand is an important tool to reduce the social impacts to marginalized women. The women’s economic status is also an important tool. If the women cannot afford healthcare or does not have proper medical insurance as a nurse practitioner I can try to find resources available at a lower cost for those who are not able to afford care. Finding out the women’s home dynamics is crucial information. According to Andermann (2016), women who suffer from domestic violence, depression, lack of housing or are single mothers have a negative effect on their health and well-being. As a nurse practitioner, asking about their life at home and referring them to local women’s groups, housing organizations, day care services and employment agencies can help to mitigate social impacts to marginalized women.
- What role does policy at either government, state, or local level play in the
marginalization of women and child bearing families?
Government plays a big role on women and their marginalization. Government that allows women to work, get an education, allow them to own property, have access to healthcare and minimize gender wage gaps allows the women to be independent, educated and therefor healthy (Unanam, 2020). For women in countries where they are not allowed to get an education, have jobs or have political freedom they are oppressed and marginalized.
- Identify one policy that impacts marginalized groups (include whether the policy is at the
federal, state, or local level).
Immigrants are a marginalized group that is dealt with at the federal level but may vary from state to state. A few states have a cluster of legislation called the omnibus laws which prohibits employers from hiring undocumented immigrants. This limits the immigrants from public services and financial freedom (Philbin, Flake, Hatzenbuehler, & Hirsch, 2018).
- Discuss how policy impacts marginalized group either positively or negatively.
Policies can impact marginalized groups both positively or negatively depending on the policy. For example, the omnibus policy affects immigrants negatively but the paid parental leave for federal workers affects marginalized groups positively by allowing workers to get 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child (Nagele-Piazza, 2019).
